Neuropsychological Assessment.
Neuropsychology is a specialized area of psychology that focuses on brain development and function, and how these affect behavior, learning, social-emotional health, and other life skills. Neuropsychology is a unique field in that it looks at both the neurological and psychological contributors to everyday well-being.
The neuropsychological assessment, often referred to as a "neuropsych," is a robust evaluation process that integrates various sources of information to develop a clear picture of who the individual is, gain insight into how they are currently functioning, and determine what is interfering with their performance.
Several areas of development are evaluated by a neuropsychological assessment, including intelligence, memory, language, visual-motor integration, attention & executive control, adaptive functioning, behavioral control, emotional well-being, and social skills.
The in-depth nature of such an evaluation allows for a more accurate diagnostic picture, profiling of strengths and weaknesses, and planning for academic, psychological, developmental, and neurological needs.
Psychotherapy.
Seeking help is not an admission of weakness, but a step towards understanding and obtaining relief from distressing symptoms.
The symptoms of mental-, emotional-, and social-disorders can have a profound effect on someone’s quality of life and ability to function. Psychotherapy can address symptoms as well as assist someone experiencing severe or ongoing stress. Some of the reasons that you might consider seeking out psychotherapy for yourself or a loved one include:
Overwhelming sadness or helplessness that doesn’t go away
Serious, unusual insomnia or sleeping too much
Difficulty focusing on work or carrying out other everyday activities
Constant worry and anxiety
Drinking to excess or any behavior that harms self or others
Dealing with a difficult transition, such as a divorce, children leaving home, job difficulties, or the death of someone close
Children’s behavior problems that interfere with school, family, or peers
Challenges with learning or work
Here is a well-written resource from the American Psychological Association (APA) for individuals new to psychotherapy entitled Understanding psychotherapy and how it works.
Sport Psychology.
Do you or your athletes:
have trouble staying focused during competition?
lack confidence during practice or games?
perform better in practice than in competition?
Are you looking for a competitive edge?
Are you concerned with your child's experience in organized youth sports?
Are you struggling to begin or continue an exercise program?
Have you lost confidence or motivation after an injury?
Are you looking for a way to improve your sport or exercise experience?
A primary goal of work with a sport psychologist is to achieve optimal involvement, performance, and enjoyment.
Parent Guidance & Consultation.
For families who may not be ready to move forward with an Assessment just yet or have recently had an evaluation conducted that did not end up helping their child in the manner they hoped, I am available to review documentation and meet with parents to try to plan an alternate course of intervention. Likewise, I often meet with parents to discuss potential plans for managing mental health and behavioral interventions with their children. Finally, I am also available to consult with other professionals and with schools. I have extensive experience providing consultation to teachers and administrators regarding children with developmental, emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges.
